Ten Government Initiatives for Promotion of Entrepreneurship in India
The Indian government has introduced a range of initiatives to promote entrepreneurship, particularly among youth, women, and marginalized communities. 1. Startup India

2. Stand-Up India
This scheme facilitates bank loans between ₹10 lakh and ₹1 crore to at least one Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST) borrower and one woman borrower per bank branch for setting up a greenfield enterprise. The objective is to encourage entrepreneurship among underrepresented groups and promote inclusive growth.
3. Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY)
Launched in 2015, PMMY provides micro-financing through three categories: Shishu (loans up to ₹50,000), Kishor (₹50,000 to ₹5 lakh), and Tarun (₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh). It helps non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises to access affordable credit, thereby enabling them to start or expand their businesses.
4. Atal Innovation Mission (AIM)
Implemented by NITI Aayog, AIM promotes a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students, researchers, and startups. It includes programs like Atal Tinkering Labs in schools, Atal Incubation Centers, and funding for innovative projects and startups.
5. Make in India
This initiative was launched in 2014 to encourage companies to manufacture in India and increase domestic production. It promotes entrepreneurship by opening up sectors for investment, simplifying regulations, and offering incentives to startups and MSMEs in manufacturing and related industries.
6. Skill India Mission
Entrepreneurship and skill development are closely linked. The Skill India Mission provides vocational training through programs like the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), helping individuals acquire industry-relevant skills necessary for self-employment or starting businesses.
7. Digital India
Launched to transform India into a digitally empowered society, Digital India supports entrepreneurs by improving internet connectivity, promoting digital literacy, and offering digital infrastructure. It has enabled many startups in sectors like e-commerce, fintech, and education technology.
8. National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC)
NSIC provides integrated support to small businesses, including marketing, credit, technology, and training. It also offers support in government procurement and helps MSMEs become more competitive.
9. Support for International Patent Protection in Electronics & IT (SIP-EIT)
This scheme supports tech-based startups by providing financial support for international patent filings, which helps them protect their innovations and scale globally.
10. TREAD (Trade Related Entrepreneurship Assistance and Development) for Women
This initiative aims to promote women entrepreneurship by providing grants to NGOs for training women and facilitating loans through banks for women-led businesses.
These initiatives collectively address key barriers in entrepreneurship, such as access to finance, skill development, innovation support, and regulatory challenges. By fostering an inclusive and supportive ecosystem, the government is empowering individuals to pursue entrepreneurship as a viable and sustainable career option.
