It is limited and derives its legitimacy from the consent of the governed.
Critics of individualistic theories argue that such perspectives often overlook the social responsibilities and collective obligations individuals may have toward one another, emphasizing too much on individual autonomy and not enough on social cohesion and equality. Despite this, the individualistic theory remains a cornerstone of liberal democratic thought, particularly in modern Western political systems.
