In a way values are those traits or customs that are ‘valued’ or held in esteem by the members of the particular society, they are deeply held convictions. There are a number of things that a society values, often these values have evolved as way of life over generations or even centuries. Values are both explicit as well as implicit. Sometimes values can also be in conflict with one another.
Social norms grow out of social value and both serve to differentiate human social behavior from that of other species. Norms are the means through which values are expressed in behaviour. Norms generally are the rules and regulations that groups live by. In a way one can refer to norms as the standards of behaviour of a group. Social norms are rules developed by a group of people that specify how people must, should, may, should not, and must not behave in various situations. Social norms cover almost every conceivable situation and they vary from standards where almost complete conformity is demanded to those where there is great freedom of choice. Religion, customs, rituals and rules are important part of the culture where with child grows in and integral to socialization.
It should be understood that an individual is simultaneously a member of institution. A child for instance, is a member of a family. But she is also a member of a larger kingroup (Biradari, Khandan etc.) consisting of individuals related by birth or marriage and she is also a part of a school or a peer group.
